Southern Voices
Southern Voices is The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science's award-winning literary magazine. Each year a new editorial staff is chosen to create the magazine under the sponsor, Mrs. Emma Richardson. For the 2020 edition, I was chosen to be Head Art Editor. Since Mrs. Richardson retired in December 2019, we had half of the time we normally have to finish the rough draft that we had to send off to the printer. I spent months graphically designing the outer and inside cover and choosing the layout for every aspect of the magazine. The full print edition will be published in May 2020.
Graphic Design
For the 2020 Southern Voices, I knew that I wanted to incorporate as much of the art aspect of the magazine as possible. Using graphic design software on my computer, I took the winning picture of our photography contest and combined the two medias to create the cover. I then made the inside cover in the same style with the editors pictures in "Polaroids" to keep up with the retro theme and created a dedication page to Mrs. Richardson's retirement.
Layout
With my team of art editors, we chose the entire layout for the magazine. We decided everything from the font to which art pieces matched each literary piece. I then arranged everything onto the pages. These pages are my handwritten notes and designs that were sent off to the printer.
